(New York, NY) — Billy Joel has announced he’s canceling all his concert dates through 2026 due to a medical condition that affects his brain. It’s called Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus or NPH. Dr. Michael Egnor, a pediatric neurosurgeon at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, says it’s an abnormal buildup of spinal fluid in the brain and usually affects one-in-500 people over the age of 70.
Dr. Egnor says there are good treatments for it that lead to a good prognosis. Along with physical therapy to strengthen a person’s legs, doctors put a small plastic tube, or shunt, inside the ventricle of the brain to allow excess fluid to flow out.
