(New York, NY) – FDNY officials are investigating a fatal explosion on a sewage transport boat on Saturday morning. The blast happened around 10:30 a.m. near West 138th Street on a docked ship in the Hudson River. A tank exploded, sending one worker into the water and injuring two others. There was damage to the ship’s hull as well. The worker who was sent into the water ended up getting pinned between the ship and the pier. Rescue workers were able to get the worker out of the water, but unable to save the life of the 59-year-old Department of Environmental Protection employee.
The two other workers injured are expected to recover, with one refusing medical attention. Mayor Eric Adams said there is no suspicion of criminality, but a full investigation is underway to determine what triggered the blast. City officials like Adams and DEP Commissioner Rohit T. Aggarwala are sharing their sympathies for the victim and their loved ones.
