(Washington, D.C) — Two young Israeli embassy staffers were shot dead Wednesday night outside an event at the Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C, by a gunman who eyewitnesses say shouted, “Free Palestine” as he was arrested. The trigger man has been identified as 30-year-old Chicago resident Elias Rodriguez. Police say he was not on their radar, but the “New York Post” reports Rodriguez was part of an extreme left wing organization that protested against Israel.
The victims have been identified as Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim. The two were planning to get married.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says security will be beefed up at Israel’s diplomatic missions around the world. Netanyahu blamed the shooting on anti-Semitism and what he called the “wild incitement” against Israel.
The NYPD says security has been increased outside sensitive Jewish institutions across the city today. Mayor Adams says says antisemitic violence has no place in our country.
