Sharks Love Long Island

mixcollage-16-may-2025-01-40-pm-2897

(Montauk, NY)  — Its almost Memorial Day and if you’re heading out to Long Island, look out for sharks. According to Craig O’Connell, the founder of O’Seas Conservation Foundation, which is based in Montauk and teaches young people about shark conservation, there are a lot of sharks off of the east end of Long Island.

More than two dozen species of sharks swim in the waters off Long Island and when it comes to Great White sharks, state officials say the sharks use Long Island waters as a nursery habitat throughout the warm season. Some encouraging news, for people afraid to get into the water, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s fisheries division, humans are not part of a shark’s normal died. Last season, there was one shark bite reported on Long Island when a fisherman got bitten near the Island Park fishing pier in September.
