(Trenton, NJ) — Governor Murphy is calling on New Jersey’s electric utilities to come up with cost mitigation plans as rates are set to rise June 1st.
The state’s Board of Public Utilities approved of double-digit increases in February for Atlantic City Electric, PSE&G, Jersey Central Power & Light and Rockland Energy. Murphy is requiring the companies to offer rate deferments to lower usage months and other ways to stabilize bills.
He’s also urging them to expand the prevention of service disconnections in winter months and suspend reconnection fees past peak usage in the summer. Murphy says the utilities, which have reaped billions in profits over the last ten years, have a duty to protect ratepayers.
