(Montauk, NY) — They’re back! It’s not even Memorial Day weekend yet, but that’s not stopping sharks from sniffing out food off of Long Island. A new drone video showed a Great White shark swimming off of Montauk. Great Whites are known to feed in the area. The photographer, who took the video, said it was earliest sighting she’s seen in years. Lifeguards in the area go on duty later this month.
It was just a couple of summers ago, after many shark sightings on the East End of Long Island, that officials stepped in. Chip Gorman, Regional Director of New York State Parks, incorporated 22 drones at Long Island state beaches, with certified operators at the controls. In addition, New York State Park Police are equipped with a large drone that can use thermal imagining, night vision cameras, and even drop a flotation device to swimmers in distress.
