(New York, NY) – New York City Mayor Eric Adams is taking a jab at one of the people who want his job. Former Governor Andrew Cuomo is among the Democrats jockeying for his party’s nomination come next month’s primary. And with Adams now running as an independent, both men are among the top candidates.
Adams says his job has been made harder by the performance of Cuomo, when he was governor. The incumbent mayor says he’s spent a lot of time “correcting” initiatives put into place by then-governor Cuomo. Adams made the comment in response to a reporter’s question about the cannabis industry, and the need to shutdown illegal shops.
Cuomo championed the decriminalization of marijuana and its legalization for recreational use while in office, among other progressive policies. Adams also mentioned bail reform and the inability to confront repeat offenders within the criminal justice system — in terms of Cuomo policies he sees as negatives.
Meanwhile, a Marist College poll puts Cuomo atop the race for New York City mayor. Among likely Democratic voters, 37% listed him as their first choice — following the ranked choice model. Zohran Mamdani — who is considered to the political left of both Cuomo and Adams — checks in as the voters’ second choice, with 18% of respondents picking him first.
Mayor Adams is not in the primary given his run as an independent.
