(New York, NY) — New York City is being ordered to turn over control of Rikers Island to an outside manager.
Federal Judge Laura Swain’s ruling says that the manager will “support remediation of the ongoing violations of the constitutional rights of people in custody.” Judge Swain found the city in contempt last November for failing to stop violence and brutality at the troubled jail.
The Legal Aid Society is calling Swain’s ruling “historic.” Mayor Eric Adams says the city will follow the rules to improve conditions at Rikers.
The judge imposed an August 29th deadline for the parties in the case to offer recommendations for who should take over as outside manager.
