(Newark, NJ) – – The FAA is blaming the 45-minute ground stop May 11th at Newark Liberty International Airport on a telecommunications problem. It was at least the third major problem to hit the airport over the past two weeks.
Just two days earlier, radar screens briefly went dark for air traffic controllers, resulting in hundreds of cancelations and delays at Newark, according to FlightAware.com. Air traffic controllers informed at least one pilot to stay at or above three-thousand feet in case they had no communication.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said there are some temporary software fixes in place, but warned it will take time to modernize the airport. Flights in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport will be cut over the next few weeks as officials look to reduce the delays and cancellations that have been plaguing New Jersey’s largest airport.
