(Newark, NJ) — Newark Airport had another telecommunications fiasco on Sunday. There was a 45 minute ground stop that led to delays and cancellations again for fliers. Sunday’s commotion was at least the third major problem to hit the Airport in the past two weeks. Just two days earlier, radar screens briefly went dark for air traffic controllers.
Flights in and out of Newark will be cut over the next few weeks as officials look to reduce the delays and cancellations that have been plaguing the airport. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says travelers need to know that if they book a flight, they’ll actually be able to fly.
He says that steps are being taken to improve communications at Newark. Duffy says that the flight reductions are needed to make things safer and more efficient. He says then they can begin the process of updating technology and hiring more air traffic controllers. Duffy did not say how long that will take and how it will impact the summer vacation season.
