(Albany, NY) — It’s more than a month late, but the fiscal year 2026 New York state budget is officially signed into law. Governor Kathy Hochul signed the 254 billion dollar spending plan this morning in front of students upstate.
The budget includes a tax cut to middle and low income New Yorkers, an expansion of the child tax credit and free breakfast and lunch for every K through 12 student. It also includes a smartphone ban in k-12 schools statewide. The budget fully funds the MTA capital plan and includes changes to discovery laws related to criminal investigations to make it harder for cases to get dismissed on technicalities.
