(Rockport, Mass.) — A woodpecker is vandalizing a town in Massachusetts. So far, the frisky bird has damaged some 25 cars in Rockport during the past two months. It seems to be puncturing side door mirrors and windshields with its beak.
According to bird experts, it’s mating season and the woodpecker thinks it’s seeing another male in the window, which it deems as competition, but it’s really his own reflection. It’s their way of staking out their territory in a very aggressive way. Some residents are coming up with clever ways to dissuade the birds by folding in their car’s side door mirrors or putting paper bags over them.
