(Washington, DC) — President Trump says he has no intention of firing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.
Last week, Trump implied he could fire Powell if he wanted to, saying he’s “not happy with him.” While speaking to reporters in the White House, Trump said he was never actually going to fire him, but he’d like to see him take more steps to lower interest rates.
Powell, a fellow Republican whose term ends in 2026, has previously said he would not step down if Trump asked him to, and that it’s “not permitted under the law” for a president to fire or demote him.
