(Washington, DC) — The artificial dyes used in Froot Loops, Doritos, Flamin’ Hot Cheetos and other snacks are going away. The FDA announced April 22nd it’s phasing out the petroleum-based synthetic dyes by the end of next year. Additives like red dye 40 give candies, sports drinks and chips a bright color that attracts shoppers.
The changes will affect a grocery cart full of foods from PepsiCo, General Mills and Kellogg’s. FDA Commissioner Marty Makary said at a news conference that American kids have increasingly been living in a toxic soup of synthetic chemicals for the last 50 years.
Health and Human Services Director Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has previously said that he wants all artificial dyes phased out within two years.
