(Rome, Italy) — Pope Francis has passed away at age 88. The leader of the Roman Catholic Church died Monday morning about a month after leaving a hospital in Rome where he was being treated for respiratory ailments. A statement released by the Vatican from Cardinal Kevin Farrell read in part: “At 7.35am this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.” The White House posted on X “Rest in Peace, Pope Francis.”

The Pontiff approved new funeral guidelines for Popes last year. His body will be moved to a chapel right away and placed in a coffin immediately. Francis will be the first Pope buried outside the Vatican in a century. Francis will be interred at St. Mary Major, one of the oldest churches in Rome and the one he would visit for prayer before trips abroad. No date for the funeral has yet been set.

Tributes are pouring in for Pope Francis. Vice President J.D. Vance, who met Pope Francis at the Vatican just yesterday on Easter Sunday, said his heart goes out to the millions of Christians all over the world who loved him. French President Emmanuel Macron said that Pope Francis always sided with the most vulnerable and the most fragile and said a great pain would be felt in France and around the world. Israeli President Isaac Herzog called Francis a man of deep faith and boundless compassion who fostered ties with the Jewish world.
