(Newark, NJ) — There’s history being made in Newark today where 16 and 17 year olds are voting for the first time in school board elections. About 17 hundred teenagers registered to vote. Last year, Newark approved a change to lower the voting age to 16 for school board elections only, becoming the first city in New Jersey to allow those under the age of 18 to vote.
Voters in Newark will choose three out of 11 candidates to serve a three-year term on the Newark school board.
In his recent budget address, Governor Murphy proposed lowering the voting age in school board elections to 16 statewide to help get students get engaged at a younger age.
