(Santo Domingo) – Following a deadly roof collapse in the Dominican Republic, New York City Mayor Eric Adams is showing his support for those affected by the tragedy. It happened this past Tuesday, when the cement roof came down on a crowded nightclub. The collapse killed 221 people and left over 150 others injured. New York is home to the largest Dominican population outside of the DR itself, prompting the trip by the mayor.
The city Department of Transportation commissioner, Ydanis Rodriguez, was born and raised in the Dominican Republic and joins the mayor on the trip. The cause of the collapse is still under investigation. Some of the notable names lost in the incident include popular merengue singer Rubby Perez, former MLB Yankees pitcher Octavio Dotel. Another MLB player, Tony Blanco, also was killed as he heroically saved his friend, fellow baseman, Esteban Germán. Adams and Rodriguez leave on Sunday and will return Tuesday.
