Seven Years for Santos

(New York, NY) – Former Congressman George Santos is back in court and the headlines. Federal prosecutors with the Department of Justice are asking for a seven year prison sentence. Santos is facing charges of wire fraud and identity theft. Last August, he pleaded guilty to those charges. The New York Republican won the open seat for New York’s Third Congressional District in 2022 after the incumbent, Tom Suozzi, decided not to run for reelection. Santos faced some pushback during his campaign, but was able to flip the seat winning by more than just over 20,000 votes.

After winning, Santos did admit that much of his backstory and resume was fabricated. Some of the lies Santos was caught up in include claims that he is Jewish, despite being raised Catholic. He has also claimed to be diagnosed with brain cancer and said his family survived the Holocaust. Santos was expelled from the House of Representatives back in December 2023.
