(New York, NY) – It looks like people wanting to soak up the sun while grabbing a bite to eat in the city will have to do it sober. Outdoor dining is making a comeback along with warmer weather, and this year eateries will have to play by the rules. The city Department of Transportation rolled out their Dining Out NYC program, allowing restaurants to apply for permits for outdoor dining set ups. However, out of 3,400 applicants, only 7 have been granted an outdoor liquor license from New York State.
While some restaurants may want to avoid the regulatory red tape, they risk disciplinary action if they don’t receive the proper approvals. In order to apply for the liquor permit, restaurants first have to get the green light from the DOT for al fresco dining. Only after they are fully approved by the city, can eateries begin applying to serve liquor with the state authority.
