(Bangkok, Thailand) – The number of victims continues to rise as rescue operations turn into recovery missions, two days after a massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake followed by several aftershocks in Southeast Asia. Myanmar’s shadow National Unity Government over the weekend said the death toll has passed 1,600 people. The country is in the middle of a civil war led by the NUG against the ruling military power.
The quake also rocked neighboring country Thailand, specifically the capital city of Bangkok. A total of 17 people died in that country, with over half of those victims killed when a high rise building near a famous market collapsed. Many still remain missing as humanitarian groups are on the ground assisting with the recovery.
