(Washington, DC) — President Trump is trying to order states to require proof of citizenship before voting.
On Tuesday (March 25, 2025), Trump signed an executive order demanding people provide documents proving their citizenship when they register to vote. The measure also threatens to withhold federal funding from states that don’t comply, and demands that all ballots be reviewed by Election Day.
Election experts say Trump can’t override a statute passed by Congress that lists the requirements of voter registration. They added that lawsuits on the issue are all but guaranteed.
