(White Plains, NY) — Flags are at half staff today throughout New York State in honor of former Democratic Congresswoman Nita Lowey, who passed away from breast cancer over the weekend. She died surrounded by family members in Harrison at the age of 87. The Lowey family released the following statement;

“Nita has quietly and bravely battled metastatic breast cancer in recent years with the same tenacity and strength that she fought throughout her 32-year career in Congress for women, children and families in the U.S. and around the world,”

Lowey served for 32 years in the House, representing parts of the Hudson Valley. Governor Kathy Hochul called her a tireless fighter for the State who never stopped working to deliver for the people of Westchester and Rockland. Lowey fought for women’s rights to abortions and programs offering more money for low income residents related to housing, childcare and education.
