(Washington D.C.) – Russian President Vladimir Putin is signaling that he may be open to negotiating an end to the Russia-Ukraine war. However, he mentioned in a Thursday press conference that he does have “reservations” about a possible 30-day ceasefire and what would develop in the Kursk region. Russia says it supports efforts from the US to bring an end to the conflict, but they say many other details still need to be hammered out. The comments come as special envoy Steve Witkoff touched down in Moscow to discuss a peace plan.
The US and Ukraine held talks earlier this week in Saudi Arabia, where Ukraine accepted the 30-day ceasefire proposal. Putin went on to say that any negotiations need to be aimed at long-lasting peace and dig into why the war started in the first place. Russian officials say that a ceasefire would just give the Ukrainian army a break and a chance to regroup.
