(Newark, NJ) — The city of Newark continues to mourn the loss of a police officer after he was shot to death Friday night. A 14-year-old boy has been charged with the murder of Detective Joseph Azcona. The 26-year-old officer had been on the force for five years. His partner continues to recover in the hospital with non life threatening injuries from the shoot out.
Azcona took a bullet as he and another officer were investigating a report that a group of people had illegal firearms. He was shot before he was even able to exit his vehicle. The teen gunman has been charged with murder, attempted murder and weapons offenses in the incident. Azcona’s mother says she does not blame the parents of the alleged shooter, telling the New York Post, “You know how kids are when they get with other kids.”
No word yet on a time and place for Azcona’s funeral.
