(Newark, NJ) – Two officers were shot and injured after a shootout on Friday night in Newark. Officers were on the scene in the Broadway section, scoping out intelligence reports of an illegal gun ring. When the detectives arrived, bullets began spraying as a 14-year-old is accused of fatally shooting Joseph Azcona, 26, before the detective even got out of their car.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka called the killing “heinous”. Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens says that authorities have to look into how the teen got the gun and why he felt that he could use it against police. The teen shooter was also shot, he was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The suspect is facing murder and weapons charges.
