(New York, NY) – New York City Mayor Eric Adams faced questions from lawmakers up on Capitol Hill this Wednesday morning. Adams was joined by fellow Democratic mayors from three other sanctuary cities: Boston, Chicago and Denver. They were facing questions from the House Oversight Committee regarding their immigration policies. Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer – a Kentucky Republican – says that the cities only create “sanctuaries for criminals”. The hearing is part of a larger probe into these sanctuary cities. Attorney General Pam Bondi floated the idea of pulling federal funding from cities that don’t comply with federal guidelines.

While the other three mayors had to simply defend their cities’ policies, Adams had to also defend himself following the dropping of his federal charges from the Trump Justice Department. Adams continues facing blowback after prosecutors moved to dismiss the corruption case against Adams. Critics claim that the dismissal was part of a quid-pro-quo deal between the Justice Department and Adams’s legal team. Several lawmakers, including ranking Democrat on the Committee Gerry Connolly, directly asked Adams if he made a deal with President Donald Trump. Even fellow New Yorker, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez put the heat on Adams pointing to the bi-partisan cohort of federal prosecutors that resigned in the wake of the charges being dropped.
