(New York, NY) – A new migrant shelter has opened up in the Bronx, and residents will have some company. The Guardian Angels, founded by mayoral candidate and WABC’s very own Curtis Sliwa, are going to be monitoring the area. The nonprofit group was originally founded in 1979 and its main mission is to keep the public safe. As part of that mission, volunteers will be patrolling outside the new shelter on Bruckner Avenue on rotating shifts five days a week.
The shelter faced some pushback from local residents and politicians alike, including Congressman Ritchie Torres. The Senior Director of the Guardian Angels, Arnaldo Salinas, told The Bronx Times that the group has received numerous calls from that area requesting the patrols.
