(Los Angeles, CA)  — California Governor Gavin Newsom says he’s directed the state parole board to investigate whether releasing the Menendez brothers from prison would pose an unreasonable risk to public safety. Newsom says forensic psychologists will look at the brothers’ behavior in prison. Erik and Lyle Menendez are serving life sentences without parole for the 1989 murders of their parents in their Beverly Hills home. The brothers say they were abused for years by their father.

If the board’s review favors releasing the Menendez brothers, it would be the first step toward Newsom ordering clemency. The governor says he expects things to move along fairly quickly, but gave no timeline of when the brothers could be freed.
