NJ Sinkhole Nightmare Gets Worse

t-80

(Wharton, NJ)  —  That sinkhole mess in Morris County, New Jersey is likely to get worse now that testing has revealed what could be ninety voids under Route 80.
Crews have been out 24-7 to assess the highway after another sinkhole opened up early last month near Exit 34 in Wharton.  They’re looking for century-old abandoned mineshafts that weren’t filled in properly before I-80 eastbound was built on top.  Finding problem spots is a game of whack-a-mole.  Ninety areas need to be assessed.  So far, 43 have been identified and 30 have been drilled and filled.
Local drivers say it takes four times as long to get anywhere because of the detours. The hole first opened up in December of 2024, and then re-appeared on February 10th, shutting down Interstate 80 eastbound at Exit 34. There’s no word on when the highway might reopen.
