(Spartanburg, SC) – With egg prices soaring nationwide, restaurants such as Waffle House have added temporary surcharge on egg dishes. Now, Denny’s has followed suit. A temporary surcharge has been added to the breakfast chain’s menu items that include eggs.
Americans are facing a shortage of eggs at many grocery stores. That’s because the bird flu has led to the culling of flocks amid outbreaks. To date, millions of hens have been euthanized in a bid to slow the spread of bird flu. Many farmers have seen their bird stocks decimated.
Denny’s, describing the situation as “fluid” has said the amount of the surcharge varies by location. But roughly 1,500 locations will have the surcharge added.
And with egg prices skyrocketing, egg smuggling is increasing. Agents with Customs and Border Protection say they’ve observed a nearly 30% surge in attempts to bring eggs across the US southern border. Bringing eggs into the US is prohibited because of the risk of spreading disease.
