(New York, NY) – Governor Kathy Hochul is holding a meeting today in Manhattan with elected officials and other advisors, as she considers whether or not to remove Mayor Eric Adams from office. This comes after four of Adams’ deputy mayors have resigned — in connection to ties between the mayor and President Donald Trump. Also, City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams has called on Mayor Adams to resign.
It was last week when charges were dropped against Adams alleging bribery and corruption. Some have claimed it was a quid pro quo between Adams and President Trump, in that the charges were allegedly dismissed in exchange for more cooperation on immigration enforcement.
Ahead of Hochul’s meeting, she noted serious consideration is needed in terms of what these developments mean for the future of New York City. Speaker Adams says its clear the mayor can’t govern. The New York governor’s office retains the right to remove a sitting New York City mayor, but that move has never been taken previously.
