(New York, NY) – The annual Westminster Kennel Club Show wrapped up on Tuesday night with Monty the Giant Schnauzer being crowned as the top pooch. Monty was named top dog out of a massive field of furry competitors. There were 2,500 dogs representing over 200 breeds. Monty beat out the other group winners – including a shih tzu, a German shepherd, a whippet, and a Skye terrier. Monty becomes the first Giant Schnauzer ever to win Best in Show at the prestigious contest. Monty also broke a long drought for the Working Group, which hadn’t produced a Best in Show winner at Westminster since 2004.Â
The annual event was back in Manhattan this year, returning after it was relocated to Westchester and then moved to Queens the past few years. The show celebrated its 149th edition this year, making it the second longest running sporting event held in the US, only outpaced by the Kentucky Derby.
