FDNY Begs: Don’t Block Hydrants

syndication-gaston-gazette-4

(Bronx, NY) –A raging deadly fire at a Bronx Thai Buddhist temple marks the second fire in just a few days hampered by cars parked in front of hydrants. Fire officials say a space heater caused the fire, which broke out at a pair of buildings, including the temple, on Anthony Avenue in Fordham early Wednesday (Feb 12th)  morning and spread to three alarms. A senior monk died, along with a student visiting from Thailand. The FDNY says the blocked hydrant cost them precious time.

The same issue complicated firefighting efforts at an apartment building in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn on  February 9th.  Police say it happened just after 3:30 Sunday morning on 80th Street in Park slope. A 34-year-old woman and a two-year-old boy were injured in the fire but are expected to be ok, but 37-year-old Gregory Fernandez was pulled from the fire and did not survive.
