(New York, NY) – According to multiple reports, federal prosecutors are preparing to drop the case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. History was made in September of last year when prosecutors accused Mayor Adams of bribery and corruption — alleging he’d accepted favors in exchange for selling out his office. Now, a memo has been sent out indicating the case could be dismissed altogether.
The Justice Department memo has instructed the Southern District of New York to dismiss the case. It comes as Mayor Adams has cozied up to President Trump recently — and amid ongoing allegations that the DOJ was “weaponized” under former President Biden. Trump had publicly expressed openness to granting Adams a pardon.
In the memo, an argument is made that the charges have restricted Mayor Adams’ ability to devote full attention and resources to the illegal immigration and violent crime. The mayor was set to go on trial in April on charges accusing him of accepting bribes and illegal campaign contributions. Part of the indictment surrounded so-called “straw donors” and campaign finance manipulation.
Meanwhile, a report says that Adams had turned the heat up on members of his administration ahead of this news — to avoid criticizing Trump. Days before the memo was issued, the mayor reportedly told top officials not to criticize the president, and not to interfere with immigration enforcement. That order, multiple sources reported to news outlet The City came at an in-person meeting late Friday at City Hall.
After a conversation with a group that included the police commissioner, schools chancellor, social services commissioner and others, Adams reportedly told them to “stop complaining,” not to criticize Trump, and to “trust” that he will make sure the city doesn’t lose its federal grants. Trump and his administration have been threatening to withhold funds to the city over its “sanctuary city” status.
