Con Ed Seeking Double Digit Rate Hikes

syndication-westchester-county-journal-news-176

(New York, NY) — Con Edison is seeking double digit rate hikes in New York City. The utility company is seeking state approval to boost the average electric bill by eleven-point-four-percent and the average gas bill by 13-point-three-percent next year.

It says it needs the more than two-billion-dollars that would be generated to pay for fortifying its grid against extreme weather and to cover investments in renewable energy. The New York Public Service Commission will take a close look at Con Ed’s proposal and hold public hearings over the next eleven-months.

Bronx Congressman Ritche Torres says the utility company’s “ask” is outrageous and says National Grid offers much more affordable rates.
