Live bird markets shut in NYC

syndication-sheboygan-press-6

(New York, NY) -- Governor Kathy Hochul is ordering all live bird markets in the New York City area to temporarily shut down following more cases of the bird flu. Hochul says her order means that bird markets in the city, on Long Island and in Westchester County need to stop taking in new poultry, sell down all current stock, undergo cleaning and disinfection and then close for five days. This comes after seven cases of the bird flu in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens were detected in recent weeks. Rockland County also just detected it's first case and Westchester County is testing a flock of geese found dead last Sunday. It's unclear how the shutdown order will impact local egg prices.
