(New York, NY) – Americans are scrambling to find affordable eggs, with the price of a dozen increasing by 50-percent in the past year. It all comes as the egg supply drops and demand rises while farmers are battling a widespread bird flu outbreak.
The average price of a dozen eggs is 5-29, up from 3-65 in November and people are finding alternative ways to get their protein. Some are choosing cottage cheese, yogurt, or even the chicken itself! Some families are stock-piling eggs when they can find them cheaply enough.
Waffle House says it has placed a temporary charge of 50 cents on each egg ordered. That’s because egg prices are soaring, fueled by a shortage brought on by the bird flu. The company says it plans to adjust or remove the surcharge once egg prices come down.
