(New York, NY) – The legal team for Luigi Mangione is adding an expert on the death penalty to their ranks. The 26-year-old Mangione is up for the death penalty due to the federal charges against him, despite capital punishment in New York being outlawed in 2004. Mangione is facing 11 charges related to the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Thompson was shot and killed on the streets of midtown Manhattan late last year, spurring a nationwide manhunt for the masked shooter. Mangione was apprehended after being spotted at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
Judge Katherine Parker approved the appointment of Avraham Markowitz to the defense team. The team is led by Karen Friedman Agnifilo. Agnifilo is also part of the team defending Sean “Diddy” Combs in court.
The last execution that took place in New York State occurred in 1963 at the Sing Sing prison upstate. In 2008, then Governor David Patterson removed all the execution equipment from prisons across the Empire State.
