New Anti-Semitism Inquiry at Columbia Univ.

A pro-Palestinian protestor is arrested outside Columbia University in Manhattan April 22, 2024.

(Washington, DC) – With President Trump having issued an executive order aimed at investigating anti-Semitism, New York City’s Columbia University is once again under fire.

It was during the spring of 2023, following the brutal and deadly terrorist attack launched by Hamas in Israel, when a “tent city” protest unfolded at Columbia University’s Morningside Heights campus. That led to clashes with police when Mayor Adams ordered the NYPD to break up the encampment. And university president Minouche Shafik eventually stepped down — after being questioned during a Congressional hearing about anti-Semitism on campus.

While many on the political left spoke out in favor of the protestors — comparing them to antiwar demonstrations amid the Vietnam War — others noted the protests had a decidedly anti-Semitic element. Still, that led to an ongoing debate as to whether or not the protesters were anti-Israel, or specifically against Jewish people.

Now, the Department of Education is investigating reports of antisemitism at Columbia University, as well as four other universities. Trump’s executive order calls on federal agencies to take action against reports of widespread anti-Semitic harassment on college campuses. Those under investigation include Columbia University, Northwestern University, Portland State University, The University of California, Berkeley, and The University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
