(New York, NY) — A Bronx man is lucky to be alive after he plunged down an elevator shaft in his apartment building on Sunday. Firefighters say they found the 78-year-old on top of the elevator car inside the Boynton Avenue building. They say the senior was unconscious when they finally were able to get to him.

Police are not sure how the man ended up in the elevator shaft. Neighbors say he may have tried to open the door before the elevator arrived. They say the incident appears to be accidental. The senior is expected to recover.

The Department of Buildings had given the owners of the building an order to make repairs to the elevator.
