(London) — Marianne Faithfull, who sang the 60s hit “As Tears Go By”, is dead at the age of 78. The British singer, songwriter and actress died Thursday in London, according to her spokesperson. Faithfull’s “As Tears Go By” spent nine weeks on the Billboard charts in 1964 and ’65,
The cause of death was not released, but Faithfull had previously suffered multiple health problems, including bulimia, breast cancer and emphysema caused by decades of smoking. In 2020, she contracted Covid-19 and was hospitalized for 22 days.
The Rolling Stones did their own version of “As Tears Go By”. She was also famously the girlfriend of Rolling Stones front man Mick Jagger in the 1960s, inspiring songs such as Wild Horses and You Can’t Always Get What You Want. After a period of heroin addiction in the 70s, she resurrected her career with the classic album Broken English.
