(Washington, DC) — President Trump’s latest executive order will restrict “chemical and surgical” sex-change procedures for minors younger than 19. Trump signed the order Tuesday, which says it will now be policy that the United States won’t “fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support” anyone younger than 19 from transitioning.
Almost every major medical organization supports gender-affirming care for transgender adults and minors. but the White House says Trump’s order prioritizes family autonomy. Opponents say the opposite, arguing the government has no right to insert itself into private medical decisions made between families and their medical providers.
The order will not block gender-affirming care for non-transgender kids, such as cosmetic surgeries or hormonal medications.
