(New York, NY) – Congressman Richie Torres – a Democrat representing the Bronx – has introduced a new bill that would give residents some financial help filtering lead out of water. In 2023, a report from the EPA found that 500,000 water service lines throughout New York State contain lead.
The bill would give a 20 percent credit for filter systems. Torres says this is just a temporary measure as landlords across the country have 10 years to replace all lead pipes carrying drinking water. However, the current administration has hinted that the placement order that was initiated under the Biden White House – will not be enforced. The executive order pausing the dispersal of federal funds may jeopardize the programs that fund the replacement of lead pipes.
