(Brooklyn, NY) — Community Board 13 in Brooklyn is voting against a Coney Island Casino. Two dozen board members voted against the plan with only eleven members voting in favor. Developers plan to build a 500 room hotel, casino, convention center and concert venue that offers retail and dining options.
It came after a public hearing that lasted more than three hours, with residents expressing concern over public safety, the economy, and the waterfront, along with young children. The Brooklyn Borough President now has 30 days to review the decision and issue his own recommendation.
The vote is one of many steps in this process, which calls for public review of environmental impacts, along with reviews from the Borough President, City Planning Commission, and the mayor. Casino applications are due by the end of June.
