(New York, NY) – Recipients of EBT who get their cards skimmed now have another headache to deal with – they no longer get reimbursed by the federal government. Congress failed to renew a program that replaces lost benefits during negotiations of the broad spending bill that was passed last month.
EBT theft has become an issue across the country and in the past there were venues for victims to get their benefits back. In New York specifically, the program assisted around 95,000 households that had their benefits drained by scammers according to the Department of Social Services .
City officials are now warning people about precautions they could take – such as using the ebtEDGE App to “lock” cards. The city has also put out a flyer so people can remain vigilant for skimming devices.
