(New York, NY) – The embattled former New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez is shifting gears in an attempt to avoid jailtime. Menendez was found guilty last summer of accepting cash and gold bars from businessmen with ties to Egypt. Prosecutors said Menendez acted as a forging agent and are asking for him to be sentenced to 15 years in prison. Reportedly, the former Democratic Senator tried to plead his case to President Biden who declined several times throughout the fall to issue a pardon.
NBC News reports that now Menendez is looking for Trump to throw him a lifeline. Allies believe Trump may be more sympathetic to the former official and could be open to a sentence commutation rather than a full pardon. However, Menendez’s voting record may block his potential blessings since he twice voted to impeach Trump during his first presidency. Menendez is set to be sentenced on January 29th.
