(New York, NY) — Just about everyone on Staten Island wants to know who is putting potted plants and bouquets of flowers in front of speed cameras across the borough. Those flowers and plants are blocking the view of the cameras set up to catch speeding cars. Who ever is leaving the flowers, is also leaving behind a note that reads “This is brought to you by the Staten Island Beautification squad”
Speed cameras have been placed in school zones to take snapshots of speeding vehicles. They operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Those caught speeding by a camera, are sent a ticket that has a fifty-dollar fine.
The New York City Department of Transportation launched the Speed Camera program in 2013. In June 2014, the pilot expanded to 140 school speed zones, in order to support the pursuit of the City’s Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries.
