(New York, NY) — TikTok’s future in the U.S. is in the hands of the U.S. Supreme Court after justices heard arguments last week about an impending ban of the popular video platform. Under a law signed last spring, ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, must sell the platform by January 19th or be banned in the United States over national security concerns. TikTok is arguing that the law violates its First Amendment rights. The High Court could step in and block the law, otherwise the app would go away from providers like Apple come Sunday.
Congress is concerned that TikTok, which has a parent company based in China, is owned by a “foreign adversary.”
A group that includes billionaire entrepreneur and former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt and “Shark Tank”-famous investor Kevin O’Leary is looking to buy TikTok. The group made a formal offer last Thursday to buy the social media platform from ByteDance. ByteDance has said on multiple occasions the platform is not for sale.
