(New York, NY) – The MTA is purchasing 265 new zero-emission buses that will operate routes across New York City. MTA Chair Janno Lieber says the buses will be covered by congestion tolling revenue.
The 40-foot buses will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by upwards of 90 metric tons annually per bus. They build on the 60 zero-emission buses that hit the streets last year, with 205 more expected later this year. The MTA says the Jamaica Bus Depot in Queens will also be rebuilt, complete with electric bus charging stations, a green roof to reduce energy use and a barrier to cut down on noise.
Lieber says the buses are among the many moves made possible due to New York City’s newly implemented congestion tolling.
