(New York, NY) — New York City Mayor Eric Adams gave his fourth state of the city address Thursday (January 9, 2024) as he faces legal issues. Adams spoke at the Apollo Theater in Harlem saying his administration has accomplished a lot when it comes to keeping New Yorkers safe by “putting thousands of new officers on our streets and taking nearly 20-thousand illegal guns off our streets.” He also noted his war on rats, saying he launched the “trash revolution” to move every single trash bag off our streets and into containers. The Mayor also talked about two ambitious initiatives he plans to launch. One tackles street homelessness and the other involves building 100-thousand new affordable housing units in Manhattan.
Many close allies to Adams that were at his last state of the city address did not appear at this one after a number high level staff resignations. There are multiple federal probes in the Adams Administration that resulted in the mayor being charged with corruption. He’ll go on trial in April right as he’s campaigning for re-election.
More than one hundred demonstrators gathered outside the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem, many of them immigration advocates. They’re worried that Adams will succumb to President-elect Trump’s plan for mass deportations. Another group, made up of off-duty NYPD sergeants, protested stalled contract negotiations and a pay issue that leaves them taking home less than officers they supervise. The mayor’s office says they’re committed to coming to a fair agreement with the Sergeants Benevolent Association.
